All-Natural Sicilian Avola Almonds
Giannetti Artisans is pleased to offer all-natural Sicilian Avola almonds, specifically sourcing the “Pizzuta” variety.
Almond cultivation has been a defining feature of the Sicilian agricultural landscape for centuries, contributing to stunning views. The enchanting white and fragrant blossoms signal the arrival of spring. Originally from Central Asia, almonds were brought to Sicily by the Greeks, and the Romans referred to them as the “Greek walnut.” Currently, almond cultivation covers 48,000 hectares of land in Sicily, yielding approximately 600,000 quintals of almonds. This production is largely concentrated in the Agrigento area and the Val di Noto, encompassing the provinces of Syracuse and Ragusa—known as the sunniest regions in Italy.
The Pizzuta almond, described by Sciascia as “a perfect oval,” is the undisputed queen of high-quality confectionery and pastry. Its shell is hard, smooth, with small pores, and has a pointed end. Pizzuta almonds are flat and delicate, bursting with a rich almond flavor. They are similar to the Romana variety but offer an even sweeter and subtler taste. Thanks to their high essential oil content, Pizzuta almonds have a long-lasting flavor. The Sicilian “Pizzuta,” one of three Sicilian varieties, is protected by a Consortium under the “Avola Almonds” designation. Giannetti Artisans exclusively imports Sicilian Avola almonds.
These almonds are distinguished by their organoleptic qualities and nutritional properties, making them a superior choice compared to other almonds on the market.
Additionally, the Pizzuta is renowned for its use in Italian confetti that you may have eaten after attending a traditional Italian wedding!
Sicilian Avola almonds are a “wealth of health,” containing a high amount of unsaturated fatty acids, polyphenols, and vitamin E. – 3.25 oz (100g)
